Our history

SciLabware Limited is a relatively new name but our company has a long and distinguished history.

Our story began with two innovations in laboratory glassware. In 1923 a new heat resistant glass called Pyrex was made under licence in the UK for the first time. Then in 1934 an assistant chemist and glassblower at the Triplex Safety Glass Company in Kings Norton, Birmingham made some samples of laboratory glassware fitted with ground-glass conical joints, a development which attracted the interest of the Royal Society. Large scale manufacturing of the new product was soon underway under the name of Quickfit and Quartz.

In 1962 we then began making glassware in a purpose built factory in Stone, Staffordshire, UK.

Following several acquisitions and a number of changes in ownership in the 1980's, the company became Barloworld Scientific, home of some of the world’s most famous brand names in laboratory equipment and consumables.

In April 2008 the glassware and reusable plastic labware division of Barloworld Scientific became SciLabware Limited.

In 2011 the business became part of the DURAN Group one of the world's leading manufacturers of borosilicate glass.

Today SciLabware is the leading European full range supplier of quality reusable laboratory ware, under the Pyrex*, Quickfit and MBL brands for glassware and the Azlon brand for plasticware. SciLabware continues to sell its products worldwide through a network of distributors. Since relocating to a state-of-the-art factory in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, in 2013, the company has continued invest in improving its manufacturing capabilities.

Our company name has changed a few times over the years, but one thing has remained constant. As a market leader in high quality laboratory consumables, we have an unrivalled reputation for product quality and customer service, setting standards for others to follow.
